Obituary of Vance Cerka

Vance Eli, son of Frank and Matilda Cerka was born August 24th 1899 near Zearing and departed this life November 6th at his home, at the age of 16 years, 2 months and 13 days. This is the second time that the angel of death hath visited this home in the past year. The aged grandfather Cerka having passed away from the same home some 10 months ago. Vance was baptized in the Evangelical church at Zearing at the age of 4 and a half years by Rev. J. G. Walz. He was converted to God at the age of ten years under the labors of the late Rev. G. W. Mullen and united with the Evangelical Church and lived a faithful Christian life until his departure to the better land. He was a most faithful attendant at the Sunday School and church services whenever his health would permit. The deceased graduated from the Eighth Grade of the rural school of Lincoln township district number 6 in 1913 and attended the Zearing High School the following fall but on account of failing health he was able to go only 4 months. He leaves to mourn his loss, one brother and two sisters besides numerous other relatives and many warm personal friends. Vance was a very studious, industrious boy and ready to do his part of the work about the home on the farm. It is needless, perhaps, to say that he will greatly missed not only at home, in the Sunday school and services of the church but also by his many young friends and associates. His early death should lead others to think seriously of life and its meaning to be ready for the future, as we believe he was ready. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church Tuesday afternoon, being conducted by Rev. J. M. Bamford pastor of the Evangelical church assisted by Rev. J. W. McLaughlin of the Church of Christ.
