Mrs. Martin O'Donnell

Mary Tyler was born in Dymock, Gloucestershire, England, October 4th 1827. She was united by the bonds of matrimony to Mr. Martin O'Donnell March 3rd 1853. Mr. and Mrs. O'Donnell made their home at Dymock until 1861 when they with three children sailed for America. On arriving they came directly to Mechanicsville, Iowa. While in Mechanicsville they were bereft of one little daughter. Early in 1865 they started for San Francisco, California going by way of New York sailing from there to the isthmus of Panama which they crossed by train then finished the journey by water. They remained in California three years. While there another little daughter was welcomed into the home. They returned to Iowa the next fall after the "golden spike" was driven on July 4th which made connection by rail between New York and San Francisco. This time they located in New Albany township, Story county, Iowa which has since been their home. Several months after returning to Iowa another son arrived to gladden their hearts. In 1895 Mr. and Mrs. O'Donnell retired from their farm and moved into the new house which they built in East Colo where they lived until about four years ago when they came to live with their daughter and son in law Mr. and Mrs. Jas. McCoy where Mrs. O'Donnell passed away Sunday morning at 9:30 Jan. 24, 1915 aged 87 years, 3 months and 21 days. She had been failing in health for a long time and continued to grow weaker until life ebbed away as the light fades at evening. Loving hearts prompted willing hands to do all that was possible for her comfort to the last. She leaves to mourn their loss her aged husband with whom she had traveled life's road for so many years through sunshine and shadow, two sons James and Martin O'Donnell and two daughters Mrs. Sarah McCoy and Mrs. Anna Dolan who all reside in Colo and were present to cheer her last moments, nine grand and two great grand children besides numerous other relatives and a host of friends who hold her in loving memory. She was a faithful wife, a loving mother, a kind neighbor and a true friend. She was a devoted member of the Roman Catholic church. Funeral services were held in St. Mary church Tuesday at 10 a. m. conducted by Father Nichols. Interment was made in St. James cemetery. Father Dan Mulcahy of Vinton of whom she was great friend was present at the funeral also a number of relatives and friends from Des Moines, Nevada, Waterloo, Marshalltown and State Center. The entire community extend sympathy to the bereaved husband and children.
