Death of Lars Hegland

Lars Hegland was born in Norway in 1831 and died at his home in Roland January 29, 1915 aged eighty-three years and three months. He came to America in 1854, settling at Lisbon, Ill., here he resided until 1856, when he came to Iowa locating on a farm about three miles southeast of Roland. Here he resided until about the year 1896 when he moved to Roland where he since resided. It will thus be seen that another of our pioneer citizens has answered the last call and passed to that shore where none return. Quite a history could be written of the Hegland family in this community. There were six brothers namely Thor, O. O., S. O., Ole, Mike and Lars. Lars being the oldest. All settled in this township except S. O. who was a resident of Milford for many years. There is one sister, Mrs. John Ritland who resides northwest of Roland. Three of the brothers served in the civil war namely, Thor, S. O. and Ole O. Thor died while in the service. The other five brothers had all been residents of Roland for many years. The death of Lars is the first break in the chain since the civil war. Though advanced in years Lars Hegland had until a short time ago been able to be around but for the past month there had been a gradual failure. In disposition he was modest and reserved looking after matters only that were of interest to himself and family. He was one of the oldest member of the Bergens church, to which he lent his influence and help. Aside from the brothers and sister mentioned he leaves a wife and three daughters, namely Mrs. Ole Rorem of Canada, Mrs. Joseph Twedt of Roland and Mrs. Peter Morten who resides on the old homestead near town. The daughter, Mrs. Rorem is expected here in time for the funeral which will be held Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Smedal.
