FATAL ACCIDENT

Friday afternoon about two o'clock as Mr. John Trites attempted crossing the C. & N. W. railroad tracks at the crossing west of the depot, he was struck by a west bound through freight train and instantly killed. He had been over town and evidently was returning home. An east bound through freight train was passing and the crossing gates were close. Mr. Trites was waiting for this train to pass and was watching it and not seeing the approaching train stepped in front of the engine. A physician as well as a number of other men reached the boy in a few seconds, but life was gone. The body was badly bruised but not mutilated. He was taken to his home, and his family notified. Mrs. Trites was in Des Moines having gone to visit her children there a couple of days before.

Mr. John Trites was born at Wittenburg, Germany, February 3, 1854 and died at Colo, Iowa November 3, 1916 aged 62 years and 10 months. When about sixteen years of age he came to America spending the first year at Neward, N. J. from there he went to Chicago, Illinois, and about a year later he came to Story county, Iowa. November 3, 1887 he was united in marriage to Miss Margaretha Hein at State Center where they made their home for a few years moving from there to Boone, and later to Colo which has been their home for about twenty-four years. Nine children were born to them all of whom are living. Mr. Trites was a shoemaker by trade. His little shop is on east main street where he worked at his trade, serving his patrons honestly and well. He was not a great talker but always had a pleasant greeting for every one and will be missed not only by his family who have lost a kind husband and father but by the entire community. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, three sons, six daughters and four grand children besides other relatives and many friends. The children are Fred and wife and two children of Des Moines, Mrs. Olga Conrad and husband of Grand Junction, Mrs. Clara Royalty and husband and child of Des Moines, Henry, Frank, Mrs. Minnie Neese, husband and baby, Cathrine, Bessie, and Alice of Colo. All were present at the funeral excepting Mrs. Fred Trites who is suffering with an injured toot and was unable to come.

Funeral services were held at the home Sunday at 2:30 p. m. conducted by Rev. W. C. McKinley. The large attendance and -------- floral tributes --- ----ly expressed the esteem and sympathy of the friends and neighbors. Interment was made in the Colo Cemetery.

Shradt of Alden, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Thompson and Mrs. Ida Thompson of Boone, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Heggen of Slater cousins, Mr. and Mrs. J. J.
