SUDDEN DEATH

Another wave of horror and sadness passed over Colo and vicinity Tuesday when the news went abroad that Mr. Joseph F. Meyers had fallen down stairs and broken his neck. Mr. and Mrs. Meyers have lived in rooms up stairs at the home of their granddaughter, Mrs. Albert Bowers and family since last fall. Mr. Meyers seemed to be in his usual health Tuesday morning about 8 o'clock when he started down stairs with two year old Erville Bowers (his great grandson) in his arms. Mrs. Bowers was near the foot of the stairs but heard no sound only the fall. On reaching the stairs she found her baby tightly clasped in both the grandfathers arms unharmed. Mrs. Bowers kept her presence of mind and phoned for her husband at the bank and the doctor. It is believed that death came instantly from apoplexy at the top of the stairs and the bones were broken when he landed at the foot of the stairs. Joseph F. Myers was born at Canton, Ohio, Dec. 28, 1843 and died at Colo, Ia., June 19, 1917, aged 73 years, 5 months and 22 days. When sixteen years of age he enlisted in the army but an uncle who was a major disclosed his age and he was sent home. When he attained the required age he enlisted in the 11th Illinois at Camp Butler. The war closed six months after he enlisted. He was at Camp Butler when President Lincoln was shot and marched in his funeral procession. After he was mustered out he went and remained a few years. On April 15, 1869 he was untied in marriage to Miss Mary Crowell at Harrisburg, Penn. They made their home at Canton, Ohio, till 1879 when they moved to a farm in Boone county, Ia. Four children were born to them, one daughter died several years ago and one son about two years ago. They moved to Madrid in 1893 and in 1912 he and his wife moved to McIntosh, S. D. and took up a claim and last fall they moved to Colo as stated. Mr. Myers was a very pleasant man to meet and those who knew him best loved him most. He was a lover of children and took great pleasure in the companionship of his great grandsons, Erville Bowers and Max Harding. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, one daughter Mrs. W. J. Ray of Boone and one son Joseph Meyers of Cleveland, Ohio, six granddaughters, Marjory and Kathryn Meyers of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Edna Harding and Mrs. Inez Bowers of Colo and Mildred and Wilma Ray of Boone and two great grandsons, one sister Mrs. Isabelle Weiland and one brother, William Myers of Canton, Ohio, and a host of friends. Funeral services were held in the M. E. church at Madrid at 2 p. m. Thursday, conducted by Rev. G. H. Johnson.
