Funeral Services for Elmer E. Sparrow

Zearing, Aug. 15--Funeral services for Elmer E. Sparrow were held at the Evangelical church in Zearing, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with Rev. R. E. Kerney officiating. The music was furnished by a quartette who sand three selections.

Mrs. John Upchurch, Mrs. Harry Martin, Gilbert Womeldorff and Glen McBride composed the quartette who were accompanied at the piano by Miss Annie Fry. The flowers were arranged by Mrs. Lyle Bailey and Mrs. L. L. Bowie. The pall bearers were Fred Smith, Herbert Robson, D. E. Johnson, R. J. Pulley and Asa Barnard of Zearing and John Holveck of Union. Burial was in the Zearing cemetery. The funeral services were under the direction of the Brouhard funeral home.

Elmer Ellsworth Sparrow, son of Ephraim and Jennie Sparrow, was born at Sycamore, Ill., Mar. 17, 1867, and died at his home in Zearing, Aug. 6, 1939, at the age of 72 years, 4 months and 20 days. He and his twin sister, Mrs. Elva Hoberland, were next to the eldest of a family of five sisters and two brothers.

At the age of six Mr. Sparrow came with his parents to Iowa and settled on a farm south of Zearing, where he grew to manhood. On Sept. 14, 1892, he was married to Miss Nellie Shaw, and they continued to live in the Zearing community. In June of 1928 they moved into Zearing, which has since been their home. Five years ago he suffered a stroke. He failed quite rapidly during the last month of his life.

Into the Sparrow home were born four children Earl George, Ross McKinley, Daisy Leota and Orrie Ellsworth, the last mentioned preceding his father in death in January of this year. Mr. Sparrow is survived by his wife, three children and 12 grandchildren. Three sisters are also to be mentioned Mrs. Elva Hoberland, Zearing, Mrs. Mati Fines, Hampton and Mrs. Flora Davis, Riverton, Wyo.

Mr. Sparrow was converted in his home under the ministry of Rev. C. A. Claypool, and has since been a member of the Zearing Evangelical church.

Relatives and friends from out of town attending the services were Mrs. Matie Fines and Barbara Jean, Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Reece, Hampton, Mrs. Flora Davis of Riverton, Wyo., Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Buffington of Milledgville, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. William Cozzens of Yates, Ill.; Mrs. Mae Hambly and Carlton of Colo; Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Hedges and Eva of Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. John Halveck an Kenneth of Union, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Harding, Mr. and Mrs. James Thornton, Colo; Mr. and Mrs. John Bloomberg, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bloomberg of Nevada, Mrs. Maude Tudor and Fannie and Fannie Conder of Fernald, Mrs. Leland Kellogg and two sons of Charles City; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Friend of Liscomb, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Knebel and Miss Marjorie Buschman, Harold Fitzgerald of St. Anthony, Joe Fitzgerald of Colfax, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Kutter of Marshalltown.
