Last Rites Here For Mrs. Backoff
Funeral services for Mrs. Joseph F. Backoff, 44, 1220 15th street, Nevada, who died Tuesday, July 15, at 2:15, at 2:15 p.m. in the University Hospital in Iowa City, following a two weeks illness were held Friday morning July 18, at 9 o'clock in St. Patricks Catholic church with the Rev. J. J. Brickley and Rev. John F. Ryan of Ames officiating, the latter preaching the funeral sermon.
A large and sorrowing group of relatives attended the last rites.
The casket bearers were Trulin Corbin, Ambrose Kline, Duncan Irish, Norman Pence, Kenneth Pepper and Harry Sherk.
Burial was in St. Patrick's cemetery.
Violet Mary Backoff was born in Kewanee, Illinois, February 3, 1914 a daughter of J. C. and Grace Adams and lived there until 1919 when moving to Iowa. She had lived her childhood life on a farm near Baxter.
She was united in marriage to Joseph Backoff of Maxwell, Nov. 27, 1930 in St. Joseph's church in Rhoads, with the Rev. J. J. Buzynski officiating. They settled on a farm near Zearing where they lived until 1931. From there they moved to their farm near Maxwell living there until purchasing a home in Nevada in 1950, at 1337 Fifth street, selling it in 1855 [sic] and purchasing the present residence, 1220 Fifteenth street, Nevada.
Surviving Mrs. Backoff are her husband, Joseph F. Backoff, one son James L. Backoff of M. Baird of Nevada, her mother, Mrs. Grace Adams of Afton, and three sisters, Mrs. Rose Breer of Maxwell, Mrs. Hazel Arch of Lomax, Ill., Mrs. Mildred Spare of Afton.
Mrs. Backoff was preceded in death by her father, James C. Adams, one brother, a sister and grandson. Relatives and friends here from out of town for the funeral were from Knoxville, Afton, Larmour, Murray, Grinnell, Colo, Maxwell, Marshalltown, State Center, Colfax, Ames, Zearing, St. Anthony and from Illinois and Texas.
