Funeral Services for Pioneer Woman Held at Zearing

Zearing, April 17--Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Beach of Zearing were held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at the Evangelical church with Rev. R. E. Kerney officiating. The hymns, "The Old Rugged Cross," "In the Garden," and "Sweet Bye and Bye" were sung by Gilbert Womeldorff, Mrs. Jerry Hankins, Mrs. Harry Martin and LeRoy Kerney accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Lyle Bailey. The beautiful flowers were arranged by Mrs. Clyde Bailey, Mrs. L. P. Sterling, Mrs. Raymond Drew and Miss Orva Perisho. The pall bearers were Lee Moore, T. G. Lundy, Raymond Drew, Harry Britten, A. P. Couser and John Varnum. Interment was in the Zearing cemetery.

Alice, daughter of Henry and Margaret Bell, was born October 16, 1854, at Wanatah, LaPorte county, Indiana, and passed away at her home near Zearing, April 11, 1939, at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 25 days. She was one of a family of six children, one brother and five sisters, only one of whom now survives, Mrs. F. M. Elliott, Altoona. She had been in failing health and confined to her bed for the last two years.

In 1886 she moved with her parents from Indiana to Polk county, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Charles M. Beach on March 19, 1873. Four children were born to this union: Frank, Carrie, Delbert and Earl, two of whom survive. Carrie preceded her mother in death Nov. 10, 1903 [should be Nov. 10, 1923] and Frank on August 17, 1907 [should be August 17, 1927.] Her husband passed away on May 8, 1907.

Mrs. Beach was a true pioneer having moved to Iowa in a covered wagon, and was one of the early settlers of this community. She moved to the farm on which she spent her last days 54 years ago. She had assisted the people of this community with many acts of kindness, sharing with them the joys of the birth of a baby, and the sadness when death claimed some member of their family. she was faithful member of the Evangelical church of Zearing.

Relatives and friends attending funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Beach, Waterloo; Mr. L. E. Beach, Chicago; Miss Beatrice Beach, Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Hall, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hall, Mr. and Mrs. John Lundy, all of Nevada; Mr. and Mrs. Verne Randol, Mr. and Mrs. Isa Bell, Mrs. George Brown, all of Maxwell.

Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Hall and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Denniston and daughter of Collins; Mr. F. M Elliott, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Elliott of Altoona; Mrs. Ilo Beach, Mr. Harold Beach, Mrs. Jane Rosenborough, Ames; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rogers, Clear Lake; Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Hinecker, Newburg; Mrs. John Drew, Miss Lizzie Flanagan, St. Anthony; Miss Nettie Patton and Tom Hilsabeck of Liscomb; Mr. and Mrs. Dan Dunn, Fernald; Mr. and Mrs. Dan Jordan and Mr. T. H. Jordon of Marshalltown; Mrs. Matie Fines, Hampton; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Fines, Colo.
