Funeral Rites Held For August Cerka

Final rites were conducted for August F. Cerka, 74, from the Bethel Evangelical United Brethren Church, Zearing, Iowa, on Thursday, May 27, 1954.

The Reverend Walter Cerka, Minister of the Sharon Evangelical United Brethren Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, officiated at the service and was assisted by the local Minister, The Reverend Darald D. Eller.

Music was by Mrs. Walter Lund who played the organ and Mrs. Paul Johns who sang two solos.

Flowers were cared for by Mrs. Floyd Steelman, Mrs. Everett Johnson, and Mrs. Ellen Cockerham.

Casket bearers included Robert Herr, George Herr, Albert Crain, Clarence Bump, Marvin Golly and Lester Bankes.

The services were directed by the Brouhard Funeral Home, Nevada and Zearing, Iowa.

Interment was in the Zearing cemetery.

Obituary

August Fred Cerka was born in Dewitt, Iowa on October 11, 1879. He passed away on May 24, 1954, at the age of 74 years, 7 months, and 13 days, at the home of his son, Kenneth Cerka of Zearing.

He came to Story County when he was 11 years old and moved with his parents to the old home place south of Zearing where he lived until his marriage to Isadora Norton in 1903. They farmed near Zearing until 1946 when he moved to Zearing to live with his son.

Mrs. Cerka passed away on April 9, 1939.

He is survived by his only son Kenneth, a brother William of Marshalltown, two sisters, Mrs. William Schuler of Colo, and Mrs. William Lyons of St. Anthony and other relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Carrie.

He was known to all as "August" and was a good father, a kind neighbor and honest in all his dealings. Those who knew him best respected and loved him.
