Held Funeral Mass for Mrs. Barrows at Madrid Church

Slater, March 13--Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Barrows were held Thursday morning at ten o'clock at St. Malachis Catholic church at Madrid. Father Poeckes conducted the services and the choir furnished the music.

A large number of relatives and friends gathered at the home here before the funeral cortege left for Madrid. The beautiful floral offerings paid silent tribute to a loved one who was gone.

Six nephews served as pallbearers, they were John Shaffer of North Bend, Neb.; Harry Shaffer of Scranton; Ray Gouger of Eagle Grove; Tim Gouger of Scranton; Walter Gouger of Jefferson and John Gouger of Scranton. Burial was made in the Boone cemetery beside her husband.

Mrs. Mary Barrow was born in Ireland. While still very young the family came to America and made their home in Wisconsin. After living there a number of years they moved to a farm near Scranton. After her marriage to Daniel Barrow they continued to live on a farm near Scranton but later moved to a farm near Boone. They had no children. Her husband died in 1911.

About twelve years ago she came to Slater and made her home with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Roney.

The three of them were in an auto accident about two years ago Mr. Roney was killed and the two women seriously injured. Mrs. Roney died several months later. Mrs. Barrow lay for months between life and death but finally regained partial health. Since her sister died, she has been cared for by Miss Tilla Larson.

Mrs. Barrow was a modest and quiet woman, very appreciative of kind words and deeds. Many who called on her and learned to know her well formed lasting friendships.

When she became ill in February her nephew and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Shaffer, came to assist in her care. Her illness became more serious and two special nurses were secured to give her every aid possible but it was of no avail. She passed away March 7 from the effects of bronchial pneumonia. She was 92 years old.*

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Ella Shaffer of Scranton who was unable to be present on account of illness. Relatives present were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Shaffer and children, Mr. and Mrs. Tim Gouger and John Gouger of Scranton; Mr. and Mrs. John Shaffer and son, Thomas of North Bend, Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Gouger of Eagle Grove; Mr. and Mrs. Grank Tasler of Jefferson and Victor Steigerwalt of Ames.

Among the friends from a distance were Mrs. Stella Holmes, Mrs. Elizabeth Finnigan of Jefferson; LaVerne Wright of Scranton; Mr. and Mrs. John Uthe, Miss Mary Roney, Irene Murphy and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Christen all of Boone and Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Mackaman of Des Moines.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: The death record of Mary (Gouger) Barrow is contradictory in that it gives her date of birth as 21 March 1868 and her age as 91 years, 11 months and 12 days. It states her father is William Gouger and mother is unknown. However this parentage is incorrect.

The 1925 Colfax Twp., Boone Co., Iowa census lists Mary Barrow as born ca. 1860 living with her sister Katie Roney and brother in law Henry Roney. Both women give their parents names as John Gouger and Anna/Annie Hogan/Hagan.

John Gouger and Anna Hogan/Hagan are also named as the parents of Katherine "Katie" Gouger on her marriage record to Henry "Harry" Roney on 16 April 1902 in Boone, Boone County, Iowa. Ella Gouger lists the same parents on her marriage record to Willard Shafer/Shaffer on 17 March 1887 in Greene County, Iowa.
