THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Monday, July 18, 2005.

Howard B. Johnson, 77, of Story City, died Sunday, July 17, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. Burial will be in Story City Cemetery.

Howard B. Johnson was born Oct. 3, 1927, to C.L. and Margaret (Beroen) Johnson. He graduated from Story City High School and attended Iowa State University. He was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1945-47. He and his father owned Johnson Livestock in Story City. He was also a polio survivor.

He married Katherine Matthews of Gilbert Sept. 24, 1950. He owned and operated Joy and Johnson Auction Co. in Ames, and his career in auctioneering spanned 52 years. His love was people and he touched the lives of many through his auctions until he retired in 2001. After retirement, he enjoyed unhurried morning coffee with his friends and traveling. He was a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, 40 & 8 and the American Legion. He was also a charter member and past president of the Iowa Auctioneers Association and a member of the National Auctioneers Association.

He is survived by two daughters, Vicki Johnson and Sheryl Phipps, both of Story City; and several nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2002; one brother; two sisters; and two nephews.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.

Memorials may be directed to Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Hospital.
