THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Monday, July 18, 2005.

Robert "Bob" Mattingly, 73, died of brain cancer Friday, July 15, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, at Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Boone.

Robert "Bob" Mattingly was born March 9, 1932, in Nevada, the son of Frank and Lola (Corbin) Mattingly. He attended grade school and high school in Gilbert, graduating from Gilbert High School in 1951. He attended Iowa State University for one year. He married Joan Hendricks June 16, 1962, in Harlan.

He lived in Gilbert from 1932 to 1962, in Ames from 1962 to 1971 and then moved to Boone. During the summer of 1951, he worked as a section worker for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. From 1952-54, he worked as a groundskeeper for the city of Ames. And from 1955 until he retired in 2002, he worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation in Ames as a lab technician.

He was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart, and he enjoyed photography, astronomy, golfing, gardening, fishing and fly tying.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, of Boone; two sons, Daniel Mattingly and wife, Melissa, of Boone and Patrick Mattingly and wife, Amy, of Van Meter; one daughter, Katheryn McCoskey and husband, Warren, of Wichita, Kan.; two brothers, Bill Long and wife, Maxine, of Ames and Norman Long and wife, Lois, of Yucaipa, Calif.; four grandchildren, Andrew and Erin McCoskey and twin girls Mia and Brooke Mattingly.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The casket will be closed. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall in Boone. A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. and a Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. The family will be present from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral chapel. Visitation continues from 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, at the funeral chapel

Memorials may be given to the family to be used at its discretion.
