Funeral Services Are Held In D.M. For Mrs. H.A. Slocum

Services for Mrs. H. A. (Ada Smith) Slocum were held Thursday, July 5, at 10 a. m. in Des Moines at the First Church of the Open Bible, Rev. Frank Smith officiating.

Mrs. Laveeta Olson, a niece, sang "Eastern Gate" and "Sunrise Tomorrow."

Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews, Raymond Slocum, Norman Lyon, Richard Sargent, Merlin Lyon, Clayton Smith and Robert Smith.

Ada Smith Slocum was born at French Grove, Ill. March 25, 1886. She married Hart Slocum in 1906, came to Iowa in 1908, living in the Ankeny-Alleman vicinity for 11 years then in the Milford-Nevada vicinity until 1932, when they moved to Des Moines. They were farmers until forced by failing health of her husband to move into Nevada, where she did practical nursing.

There were three children, Hazel, Wayne and Harold, also one sister, Laveeta, who she raised with her family, since her own mother died when she was just 13 years old. Her live was entirely devoted to service of others, being able-bodied and busy until the end.

She was an active member of Central Presbyterian Church in Nevada, Iowa, during their residence here, then joined the Open Bible Church in Des Moines in 1934. Burial was at Pine Hill just north of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1948, also by two sons, Harold, who was killed in a tractor-baler accident in 1941 and Wayne, who died in 1947. Two grandchildren, one sister and her parents.

Survivors include the daughter, Mrs. Eldon Lyon of Cambridge, in whose home she died, a sister, Mrs. Albert Fausch of Alleman, Iowa, a brother, Earle Smith of Waterloo, Iowa, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

The ladies of the Shipley Church served dinner to the family and relatives at noon Thursday, at the home of the Eldon Lyon's.
