Harold Slocum Fatally Injured in Tractor Accident

Harold Slocum, 20, young Polk county man and former resident of Nevada, was instantly killed when run over by a heavy tractor of a farm six miles south of North Grant school in Story county early Saturday evening. Riding standing on a step on the side of the tractor he fell off and one of the large wheels passed over and crushed his head and the hay bailer which followed ran over one leg. He is a son of H. A. Slocum of just south of the county farm in Polk county.

The young man, owner and operator of a custom bailer had been working on the Lyon brothers farm in Grant township. Completing the day's work, the outfit was on its way to the house when the fatal accident occurred.

The sheriff's office was notified and a doctor and Coroner Mills were called. Death was instantaneous. No inquest was deemed necessary.

The body was taken to a Des Moines mortuary and funeral services will be held in Des Moines.

The Slocum family, consisting of the parents, two sons and a daughter, lived near and in Nevada for a number of years, going from here to Des Moines.
