Obituaries

Lu Cinda "Lou" Schurtz

Mrs. Lu Cinda "Lou" Schurtz, age 85, of 827 Prince Street, Grinnell, died Wednesday at Friendship Manor in Grinnell. She was the daughter of John and Nancy Strickler Oyler and was born June 10, 1890 in Story County.

She attended rural school near her home in Collins Township. On June 15, 1907 she was united in marriage to Orvil Sarsfield in Collins. To this marriage were born three children, Arthur, Mildred and Orvil.

Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Sarsfield farmed near Maxwell. Mr. Sarsfield died February 22, 1935. Following Mr. Sarsfield's death, she moved to Nevada.

On October 3, 1937 she was united in marriage to Walter Raymond Schurtz in Chicago, Illinois. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Schurtz made their home in Nevada and Boone until 1941 when they moved to Des Moines.

Mr. Schurtz died October 14, 1964. Mrs. Schurtz moved to Grinnell two and one-half years ago to be near her daughter.

Survivors include two children Mrs. Perry (Mildred M.) Wilson of Grinnell, and Orvil C. Sarsfield of Des Moines, nine grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; one sister Mrs. Marie White of Maxwell; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands; one son, Arthur I. Sarsfield, who died December 16, 1972; her parents, four sisters Hannah M. Dolph, Florence E. Clayberg, Jessie B. Robertson; and Cora A. Coughenour, and four brothers James, John, Clifford and Tilman Oyler.

Funeral services for Mrs. Schurtz were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Christian Church in Maxwell, with th Rev. O. E. Barrow of Elkhart officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Verl Myers, organist, and Don Myers, vocalist. Casketbearers were Richard Collins, David Henry, Wayne Henry, John Holmes, Michael Holmes, and Robert Holmes. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery at Iowa Center. Arrangements were made at the Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell.
