SERVICES HELD FOR JOE CHITTY
Former Johnson Grove Resident Buried Friday
Funeral services for Joe W. Chitty, well known resident of the Johnson Grove neighborhood for many years, were held Friday afternoon of last week, at the family home.
Mr. Chitty died at the Mary Greeley hospital of Ames, last Wednesday, a few days after he had submitted to an operation for cancer. He was thought to have been improving, but later complications were too much for his weakened condition and death resulted.
Following the short services at the home, the body was taken to the Johnson Grove Methodist church, where services were held with interment later in the nearby cemetery.
Obituary
Joseph N. Chitty was born March 3, 1860, in White Side county, Ill. In the spring of 1877 his parents came to Story county, and lived one year on a farm near Colo. In the spring of 1887 they moved on what was called the McCall section near Fernald. Joe became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in 1880, and was baptized by Rev. John Jefferson, pastor of the church. He was married to Calinda B. Page, August 15th, 1880, and to this union there were born four children, three boys and on girl, two of the boys dying in infancy, and Cora Chitty Kuhn and Chriss A. Chitty are left to mourn a father's love.
In February, 1905, his wife preceeded him to her reward, and in 1906 he was married to Martha E. Koons of Ames. He has resided in Story county for 43 years, and over 40 years of that time he was a consistent and faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and his life has been an open book to all who knew him.
He began to fail during the past winter, and as spring came he declined rapidly, and it was discovered that he had cancer. He had one chance if he went under an operation, and he took it. Before going to the hospital he made all preparations, selecting his pall bearers, the singers, and the text of his funeral sermon, "I have fought a good fight; I have kept the faith." The operation was performed Thursday, July 21st, and seemingly was a success, but he was too weak to rally, and on Tuesday, July 26th, he calmly passed away.
He was ready, and had great faith in his Savior. He was loved by everybody, and his work in the church at Johnson's Grove has told for many years. He was laid away in the cemetery at Johnson's Grove, after a service in the little church he loved, conducted by his pastor, Rev. M. A. Banker.
