Early Day Pioneer Died in California

Relatives here have received word of the death of Santa Cruz, California, December 2, of Mrs. Matilda Jane Miller, age 90 years.

Mrs. Miller was known to many of the older residents as the mother of the late J. W. Hague of Nevada.

Mrs. Miller was a native of Springfield, Illinois, where she was born July 22, 1844. She came out to Iowa with her parents when a girl of 17 and was married to Isaac Hague in 1856, at Des Moines. Three sons were born to them, the sons being Williams, Frank and Milo, all having passed away.

Mr. Hague died in 1866 after their home had been located on a farm south of Nevada. She was later married to Joseph Miller. Four children were born to this union and all of them survive the parents. They are Mrs. William Kirk of Live Oak, Calif., Mrs. Sewell Smith of Soquel, Calif., Harry Miller of Santa Cruz and Clyde Miller of Burke, Idaho.

She also leaves 13 grand children and 16 great grandchildren.

She came to Story county as Mrs. Hague and it was here she met and married Mr. Miller. Both were of pioneer Iowa families and did their bit in pioneering the county. She began housekeeping on what is yet known as the Hague homestead, now operated by Tom Tolliffson and son southeast of Nevada.
