THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, July 13, 2005.
A memorial service for David Kincaid Bruner will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 17, at Unitarian Fellowship in Ames.
David Kincaid Bruner, 92, of Ames, died June 15, at Green Hills Care Center. He was born in St. Louis on July 30, 1912, graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1932, and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1941. He married Charlotte Hughes Bruner in 1939 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a full professor at Iowa State University, teaching there for 41 years prior to his retirement in 1983. During that period, he coached the debate team, taught drama, developed and taught courses in propaganda analysis and Sartre and existentialism, and hosted a long-running lecture series, Books and Coffee. Collaborating with his wife, he also co-hosted a series on WOI Radio about African literature, bringing many African writers to Iowa State University.
At 75, he translated Evelyn Accad's novel, L'Exisee, into English, a novel using female circumcision as a metaphor and reality for violence and the subjugation of women in the Middle East. Both he and Charlotte were recognized for their leadership in bringing African literature to the English speaking world and for pressing for greater cultural awareness and understanding in the United States.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte.
He is survived by one daughter, Nell Sedransk of Bethesda, Md.; one son, Charles Bruner of Ames; and five grandchildren, Ian, Kyra, Alex, Eli and Michael.
Memorials may be made to Youth and Shelter Services of Ames, where he provided volunteer service.
