Sophia Holmes is dead at 87, rites on Friday

Mrs. Sophia Holmes, 87, died Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. at the Bethany Manor Nursing Home in Story City, where she had been a resident for 4 1/2 years.

Mrs. Holmes was born in Wardal, Norway, on February 19, 1881, the daughter of Andrew and Carolyn Thompson. On October 6, 1898 she married Edward Holmes and they were in business in Gilbert until his death in 1946.

Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 p.m. at the Gilbert Lutheran Church with Rev. M.C. Hagedorn officiating. Burial will be in the South St. Petri Cemetery near Gilbert.

Surviving are two daughters, Bernice (Mrs. Orlan Askelson) of Gilet and Sylvia (Mrs. Henry Peterson) of Spring Valley, Calif.; five grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Laura Hartman, Norwalk, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sons and two brothers.
