Funeral Services for H. H. Johnson Were Held Friday

Funeral services for Henry H. Johnson, 79, who died at his home seven miles southwest of Nevada Wednesday, June 14, were held Friday in charge of a former pastor, Rev. Findley of Des Moines. There was a brief service at the house at 1:15 and at the Methodist church in Cambridge at 2:00.

The service at the house there included a song by a quartette consisting of Mrs. J. S. Spragg, Mrs. Fred Woods, and Viola and Velma Davis, who sang, "No Not One."

In the service at the church Rev. Findley was assisted by Rev. Peder Buland of the Palestine church and the songs rendered by the quartette were "Sweet Peace, the Gift of God's Love," "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Jesus Lover of My Soul."

The pall bearers were Eimer Jones, Henry Nelson, Axel Mason, McCall Hillestad, George Zook and George Clauson. Interment was in the Cambridge cemetery.

Henry H. Johnson, son of Howard and Melinda Johnson, was born in Norway, September 16, 1853 and departed this life at his home near Cambridge on Wednesday, June 14, 1933 from the effects of a stroke caused by a fall from a wagon on May 23 and the complications of old age, at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 28 days. When he was three years old the family came to the United States, settling at Morris, Ill. During the Civil war his father enlisted. He never returned and the family soon came to Iowa, settling in the Palestine vicinity where Mr. Johnson grew to manhood. He was confirmed at the Palestine church May 31, 1868.

On Nov. 18, 1888 he was united in marriage to Ruth Wire at Cambridge. Seven children were born to this union, five of whom with their mother survive. They are Howard J. Johnson of Nevada, Mrs. Althea Dobbe of Butterfield, Minn., Joseph H. Johnson of Kellogg, Elbert and Roy at home. Nine grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by two children, George who died in infancy and Mrs. Izaoma Richardson who died April 19, 1931. He was also preceded by an only sister, Mrs. Alice McKee. Besides his own family Mr. Johnson left no surviving relatives in the United States except four nieces and two nephews, Andrew Ersland of Des Moines, Howard Ersland of Story City, Mrs. Martin Haukoos of McCallsburg, Mrs. Orville Sutton of Iowa Center, Elsie and Annie Russell of Glenwood.

People from a distance attending the services included Mrs. L. C. Dobbe and daughters Irma and Wilma of Butterfield, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Johnson and children Robert and Delores of Kellogg, C. E. Ross and daughter, Miss Ida and George Wire of Laurel, Mrs. C. F. Freese and Mrs. H. F. Freese of Kellogg, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ersland of Story City, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Haukoos and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Twedt of McCallsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fink and family of St. Anthony, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Albaugh of Elkhart, Mr. and Mrs. John Marsh of Ames, Mrs. Clyde Hicks and children of Manning, Diehl Richardson and family and Mrs. Wm. Richardson of Maxwell.
