Many Attended Final Rites for Mrs. H. M. Vinsel

Funeral services for Mrs. Herbert M. Vinsel, 46, whose sudden death occurred at her home, 643 E avenue early Wednesday morning, were held from Central Presbyterian church, Friday afternoon at 2:30 following a brief prayer service at the home.

The services were in charge of W. O. Benthin of Central Presbyterian church, assisted by Dr. Campbell Coye, long time friend of the family, Rev. G. A. Lawton of the Nevada Methodist church and Dr. James T. Mordy of Cottage Grove Presbyterian church in Des Moines.

The large concourse of people which filled the church to its capacity during the funeral hour and the beautiful flowers which banked the front of the church, all testified to the sorrow felt in the passing of this splendid young woman and the sympathy felt for the grief stricken husband and the parents who had been so recently called upon to suffer a similar loss.

An opening poem was read by Mr. Benthin after which Dr. Coyle offered prayer and Rev. Lawton read from the scriptures.

"Ah Sweet Mystery of Life" a favorite poem of the deceased was sung by Mrs. W. W. Shaffer with Mrs. C. E. Armstrong accompanying at the organ.

Brief and fitting tributes to the life of the deceased, whose sudden passing had cast a hush over the community were given by Dr. Mordy and Mr. Benthin.

Dr. Mordy spoke of the flower garden of the deceased which he had visited during the flowering season and the inspiration she had been to him because of her intimate acquaintance with the many lovely flowers it and other gardens visited, contained. This very evident love for the beautiful was one of the outstanding characteristics of the deceased and one which will always remain as a treasured memory, he said.

The positions of responsibility occupied in the church and the strength and comfort she had been to others was emphasized by Mr. Benthin in his tribute to the deceased.

In addition to being a member of social organizations, Mrs. Vinsel was a member of Nevada Chapter A. M. P. E. O., was a past matron of the Eastern Star, pas president of the Nevada Woman's club, a member of the Nevada Board of Education and of the Story County Board of Education.

As a tribute to her memory, the Nevada schools were closed Friday afternoon, the entire teaching force attending the services in a body.

Interment was in the Nevada cemetery by the side of the sister, Mrs. E. O. Carter of El Centro, Calif., who had been laid to rest on Jan. 26.

Among the relatives and friends here in attendance at the funeral in addition to Mr. and Mrs. James Addison and his family for Des Moines, were the following:

Mrs. L. R. Jungkunz, Freeport, Ill.; Alice Woollens, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Robt. Teachout, Dixon, Ill.; Mrs. Katie R. Addison, Kansas City, and the following from Des Moines; Mrs. Wm. Stevenson, Mrs. Wm. Hayes, Mrs. Mary Holland, Mr. Harvison Holland, Mrs. Emma Page, Mrs. Carrie H. Dickey, Mrs. R. S. Patrick, W. W. Wise, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Brownlie, Marie Brownlie, Mrs. Anna Gressie, Mrs. Katie Loughran, Glenn Corcoran, Dr. and Mrs. Geo. May, Dr. and Mrs. Jas. Mordy and Mr. and Mrs. Milo Thornton.

In addition to the above were many friends from Ames, Maxwell and other place in the county.

The following obituary was read by Mr. Benthin during the funeral service:

"Hazel Vinsel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Addison, was born on a farm south of Maxwell, in Polk county, Iowa, May 12, 1886. Practically speaking, all her life was spent in the immediate vicinity. She graduated from the Nevada high school in 1905. Thereafter she attended Cornell college for two years. In 1909 she took her bachelor's degree at the University of Iowa. Subsequently she taught both in the schools of McCallsburg and Nevada.

"She was associated in membership with a number of the better known organizations. She was a member and a trustee of Central Presbyterian church. She has held high offices in the Easter Star; she belonged to the P. E. O. and was identified with a large number of other kindred organizations.

"For nine years she has been a member of the local school board; she also was a member of the County Board of Education, education being one of her deeper interests.

"It was on August 1, 1912 that she was married to H. M. Vinsel, at Nevada. Those of the nearest relatives wo mourn her sudden passing are her husband; the little adopted daughter, Mary Ellen; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Addison; her brother, James C. of Des Moines; her brother-in-law in California and his two sons (her nephews) Addison and James Carter. There of course are other more distant relatives who with the many friends are saddened by her sudden death.

"It was on the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 8th at about 4:30 when she was taken. There had been no indication of precious illness when during the quiet of night her spirit soared away, joining her sister Anna who was taken but a few weeks before.

"Her long and happy acquaintance on part of so many speaks in the most eloquent terms of the esteem in which she was held. The deep appreciation of the vacancy created in so many places, by "going on before," in its own mute way declares an appropriate eulogy. Those who knew her best know that she was given to enjoy the things beautiful, helpful in the community, and the joys of friendship. Though she was lent to us for but relatively few years, long will she live ono through the influence of a fragrant memory."
