Heggem Funeral Slater Pioneer; Held on Sunday

Special to the Journal.
Slater, Jan. 10--Funeral services for T. O. Heggem were held Sunday afternoon, 1:30 o'clock at the Bethlehem church. The services were in charge of his pastor, Rev. E. R. Rorem. Many beautiful floral tributes were placed near the casket. Mrs. Fred Carroll and Mrs. Stanley Mosey had charge of the flowers. A group of the Heggem children gave a sum of money to the Missions in his memory. The Ladies Aid of which Mrs. Heggem is a member also gave a sum of money to the missions in his memory. The Men's chorus sang "Jesus is Calling," "Beautiful Isle" and "Remember Me." Mrs. M. S. Heggem sang "Den Store Hvide Flok." The pall bearers were as follows: Floyd Johnson, Tom Skola, Emerhoff Peterson, Louie Reinertson, Ray Harmer and Herbert Nervig. Interment was made in the Bethlehem cemetery.

Tom Olai Heggem was born in Des Moines, February 5th, 1859. His parents were Christian and Anna Serina Heggem, pioneers of the early days. His marriage to Miss Julia Knutson took place September 5th, 1882. Fourteen children were born to this union, three died in infancy. Mr. Heggem lived near and in Slater all his lifetime. He and his wife were charter members of the Bethlehem church. He was a teacher in the Sunday school for fourteen years and was an active member in the affairs of the church. His health had been slowly failing the past year. He suffered a stroke New Years Day and passed away Thursday evening, January 5th at the age of 73 years and 11 months. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife and eleven children as follows: Mrs. Tom Skola of Cambridge, Sanford Heggem of Des Moines, Miss Jeanette Heggem of Des Moines, Mrs. Ray Harmer of Gary, Indiana, Mrs. Louise Reinertson of near Kelley, Mrs. Floyd Johnson of near Madrid, Mrs. Emerhoff Peterson, Miss Kathryn Heggem of Ames, Mrs. Harold Johnson of Oakland, Calif., Miss Loretta Heggem of Berkeley, Calif., and Miss Doris Heggem of Slater; also fourteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Two brothers, Oliver H. Heggem of Seattle, Washington, and Severin Heggem of Slater, two sisters Mrs. Sarah Anfinson of Thomas, South Dakota, and Mrs. Mrs. Malinda Thompson of Le Grand. All the children were present at the services.
