THIRD VETERAN ANSWERED TAPS

PETER BROWN DIED AT HOME OF DAUGHTER IN DES MOINES

Special to the Journal.
Maxwell, Dec. 16--The death of Peter Brown, 90, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Calen in Des Moines Sunday, marks the passing of the third Story county Civil war veteran within the past two weeks.

The first of this trio of silvery-haired veterans to answer the "taps" was Andrew Nelson, 93, of Cambridge of November 29 and next came William Albright, 90, of Zearing, on November 30.

Funeral services for Mr. Brown will be held at the Presbyterian church in Maxwell on Tuesday afternoon at 2:00, after which the body will be laid to rest in the Maxwell cemetery.

Mr. Brown was a native of Washington county, Ohio, where he was born March 7, 1845. He came to Iowa with his parents when a lad of ten years and this had been his home since. He served in the Union army in an Iowa volunteer regiment of infantry until he was discharged because of disability.

His home has since been in Iowa and much of the time in the vicinity of Maxwell in Story county. He was engaged in the implement business in Maxwell for a number of years and was well and favorably known over the county.

He leaves to mourn his death in his immediate family A. J. Brown of Multnomah, Oregon; Mrs. A. M. Olinger of Clear Lake; H. B. Brown of Cambridge; R. N. Brown of Hillsboro, Oregon; Mrs. W. O. Callen of 723 Pennsylvania avenue, Des Moines, at whose home he died, and L. F Brown of Portland, Oregon.

Burial will be by the side of the wife who died 17 years ago.

Celebrating his ninetieth birthday on March 7 last, he had been enjoying good health until October 28, when he suffered a slight stroke and since then had been confined to his bed.

He was one of the pioneer Iowans who was well known and highly respected in the community in which he has spent the greater part of his life.
