Ersland Funeral Services at Slater
Slater, Dec. 7--Funera services for Jacob Ersland, 86 years old, were Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home and 2 o'clock at the Bethlehem church. The services were in charge of Rev. E. R. Rorem, assisted by Rev. P. Buland of Cambridge.
The many beautiful floral offerings were cared for by Mrs. J. C. Ersland and Mrs. Herbert Nervig. Two duets, "My Faith Looks Up To Thee," and "Den Store Hvide Flok" were sung by Mrs. M. S. Heggen and Mrs. A. L. Peterson, accompanied by Mrs. Harold Croft of Des Moines.
The pall bearers were J. C. Ersland, Harold Ersland, Herbert Nervig, Francis Nervig, Carlton Stevens and Billy Stevens. Burial was made in the Bethlehem cemetery.
Jacob Ersland was born September 10, 1849, in Shold, Norway, and died at his home here December 2, 1935, at the age of 86 years, 2 months and 13 days. He came to America in 1866 with his parents, Nels and Britta Ersland and located near Slater.
His marriage to Johanna Cleveland took place January 11, 1879. Ten children blessed their union. Eight of the children are living.
Mr. Ersland was a charger member of the Bethlehem congregation and served as a deacon for many years. He always took an active part in the work of the church.
He was a devoted husband and a kind and loving father. His grandchildren gave a sum of money to the Ebenizer home for the aged in his memory. His wife also gave a sum of money to the missions in his memory. The Ladies Aid of the Bethlehem church gave money to the missions in his memory
Mr. Ersland had been failing in health the past year. Several weeks ago he fell and hurt his ankle and became bedfast. He suffered a heart attack Monday from which he did not recover.
He is survived by his wife and eight children: Ben of Duluth, Minn.; Knute of Estherville; Nels of Huxley and Jerome of Slater; Mrs. H. O. Paulson of Forest City; Mrs. Graydon Stevens of Pilot Mound; Mrs. Ruth Griffith of Washington, D. C., and Miss Olive Ersland of Des Moines. Also one brother, Henry Ersland of Slater; fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
