Funeral for Oscar Johnson Held in Bergen Church Saturday
Oscar Lewis Johnson died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ray Farr, near Laurel, at 4 p.m., November 26 at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 14 days. For the past month he was confined to his bed. Death was due to a complication of diseases and his advanced age.
Mr. Johnson was born December 12, 1857, in Norway, and was brought to this country by his parents when he was six months old. The family settled first in Illinois, where Mr. Johnson lived until he was 20 years old, when he came to Iowa, settling at Roland.
He was married to Betsy Simmons and remained in Roland and McCallsburg until 1920 when he moved to Winnebago County, where he lived for several years. For the past seven years he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Farr. Besides Mrs. Farr, six other daughters, Mrs. I.E. Halverson of Armstrong; Mrs. Frank Lynch of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. A.J. Johnson of Hayward, Minn., Mrs. Ted Hoit of Marshalltown, Mrs. Andy Honkins of Mason City, and Miss Bessie Johnson of Laurel, and two sons, Silas of Beaman and Maynard of this place survive. He also leaves 18 grandchildren, one great grandchild, two half brothers, and two half sisters.
The funeral was held Saturday morning at the Estel funeral home at Marshalltown and at Bergen Lutheran church at Roland Saturday afternoon with Rev. Wilson of Marshalltown officiating. Music was furnished here by Misses Ruth Peterson and Alice Thompson. The pall bearers were five sons-in-law, Ray Farr, I.E. Halverson, Frank Lynch, A.J. Johnson and Ted Hoit, and one grandson, Lester Halverson. Internment was made in the Roland cemetery."
