Funeral Rites Held on Sunday for Wm. R. Mathews

Funeral rites for William R. Mathews, 74, native son of Story county who died at the Iowa sanitarium on Christmas day, were held at the Nevada Evangelical church on Sunday afternoon with Rev. C. E. Lookingbill in charge. Burial was in he Evergreen cemetery at Iowa Center later in the afternoon, where the body was laid to rest by the side of the wife who had passed away in 1935.

Rev. Theodore Yackel of the Evangelical church in charge of committal service. Pallbearers were Claude Moran, Charles Green, Leon Golden, Carl Hill, Elmer Whitaker and Clarence See.

The church was well filled with old neighbors and friends of Mr. Mathews and the family.

William R. Mathews, son of William and Elizabeth Mathews, was born Oct. 27, 1867 on the old Mathews homestead about five miles southeast of Nevada, where he lived his entire life until retirement about four years ago.

He was married to Rosa E. Pizer on April 3, 1895. This union was blessed with five children, William James, Herbert Hugh, Ruby, Rhoby Caroline and Burl Clarke. His wife, Rosa, and two children preceded him in death. His wife died Oct. 4, 1935; Ruby died Jan. 27, 1902 at three years of age, and Herbert Hugh died Dec. 7, 1937.

He leaves to mourn his passing two sons William James near Maxwell, Burl Clarke east of Huxley, one daughter, Rhoby Caroline, now Mrs. Harold Matters of east of Ames; one sister Mrs. Ellen Ayers of Nevada; five grandchildren and many friends.

He was a successful farmer, a good neighbor and always ready to give assistance where he could.
