Mr. Finnie, a native of Illinois where he was born April 5, 1846, came to Iowa with his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Phillips, in 1855, when he was nine years of age. The family settled on a farm 4 miles west of Collins.

There he grew to manhood and was united in marriage to Martha Ellen John, June 29, 1871, at the John homestead on the site of where the town of Maxwell now stands.

Mr. and Mrs. Finnie had their home continuously in the community around Collins and Maxwell.

Four children were born to them, three of whom survive the parents. Mrs. Finnie died May 18, 1932 and one son, Marshall Finnie, died in 1930.

The surviving children are Mrs. George Holmes of Collins, Walter W. Finnie of Nevada and Mrs. Howard Nibel of Des Moines. They also leave 7 grand children and two great grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Finnie had celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary at their home in Collins on June 29, 1931. Since the death of the wife, Mr. Finnie had made his home with his children, spending much of the time with his daughter in Collins. The past summer had been spent at the home of his son, Walter Finnie in Nevada.

Until he was taken ill about two weeks ago, his health had been good and he was able to enjoy the company of members of the family and his old time neighbors and friends.
