Funeral Services for John Byres
Special to the Journal.
Colo, July 25--Funeral services for John Jacob Byers who died Friday morning at the State hospital at Woodward, was held from the home on Sunday afternoon. Funeral services were in charge of Rev. Scheuermann, pastor of the Methodist church. Songs, The Old Rugged Cross, and Somewhere, were sung by a trio, William Lounsberry, Ray Goodenow and Bert Lambeth, Mrs. S. B. Goodenow presided at the piano. The many beautiful flowers were in charge of Mrs. Delbert Dickinson and Mrs. Lee Wilson.Those attending the funeral from out of town, James M. Byers, grandfather, George Byers and Jake Byers of Elkhart, Mr. and Mrs. James Buck, Mrs. Gay Buck and Miss Coleen Byers of Ames, Mrs. W. H. Parry and daughter Jeane Marie of Miami, Fla., Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Patterson and Harlan and Neva, Mr. and Mrs. Wright and baby of Nevada, Mr. and Mrs. John Keilly and daughter Margaret and Earl Webb of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. James McNiven and Mr. and Mrs. Edd Ramsey of Woodward and Miss Nellie Geer of Clarinda.
John Jacob Byers was born five miles southeast of Colo on December 26, 1910 and passed away at the age of 24 years, 8 months, 9 days. At the age of three months he moved with his parents to Richards, Mo., and during the two years that they lived there he was twice taken ill with malaria fever. In August 1913 the family moved to Colo and at the age of four years he was stricken with epilepsy. During the following four years everything was done by doctors and specialist to effect a cure. On January 14, 1918, he entered the Meadow, the State hospital for epileptics at Woodward. He entered their school and attended it off and on for five or six different times. In 1920 he contracted the flu. Because of this he could not go back to school and two years later he had a very severe case of flu and from then on he was never again physically able to attend the school. He had been seriously ill innumerable times during the last 12 or 13 years.
The parents were called to the hospital on Tuesday, July 16, and remained at his bedside until the last. At 8:25 on Friday morning, July 19, he peacefully passed away. He was a charter member on the cradle roll of the Colo M. E. church. He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John S. Byers of Colo, and three sisters, Mrs. George L. Patterson of Nevada, Mrs. Ruth Pierce and Miss Mary Byers of New York City.
