THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Monday, June 27, 2005.

George P. Kelley, 73, of La Porte City, died Friday, June 24, at La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center after a lengthy illness. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 28, at American Lutheran Church in La Porte City. Graveside inurnment services will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Lowden.

George P. Kelley was born April 9, 1932, in Council Bluffs, the son of George L. and Clara Carlson Kelley. He graduated from Ames High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-53 in Weisbaden, Germany. He married Eva M. Licht Oct. 16, 1954, in Cedar Rapids. He was a teacher from 1958 to 1968, teaching industrial arts and coaching basketball and baseball in Walker and Eldridge. He obtained a master's degree in 1967 and began his principalship in North English, Bennett, La Porte City and Hudson.

His hobbies included camping, golf, woodworking, movies and sports. He was a former member of the La Porte City Lions Club and a member of the La Porte City American Legion San Diego Post No. 207.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Patricia (Daniel) Kautz of La Porte City; two sons, Mark (Nancy) Kelley of Cedar Falls, and Michael (Linda) Kelley of Mount Pleasant.; five grandchildren: Elijah Kautz, Kodie Kelley, Daniel, Jackson and Grace Kelley, one sister, Norma (Willie) Bernes of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Larry (Maureen) of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Jim of Ames; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorothy Burdick; and two brothers, Jack and Don Kelley.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 27, at American Lutheran Church in La Porte City.

Huisman Funeral Home of La Porte City is in charge of arrangements.
