Former Kelley Man Died in Virginia
Special to the Journal.
Kelley, May 8--L. W. Johnston*, received the sad news of the death of his only brother, John M. Johnston, 70, which occurred at his home in Roanoke, Va. Friday morning, May 3.His illness which started with an ulcerated tooth and from which infection resulted, was of but a week's duration, and came as a shock to the family. The body was taken to Vermont to be laid beside a daughter, Edith, 11, who died in Kelley in 1912.
Mr. Johnston was born in Denmark and came with his parents to Story county at an early age living on a farm a few miles east of Kelley, after which his parent moved to Kelley and from where they died. After some years Mr. Johnston, with his wife and two small children located in Kelley and where they lived until removing to Virginia and in that state have since resided.
While in Kelley the deceased was an active member of the Congregational church, was manager of the Clark-Brown elevator for many years, and interested and a promoter of educational and community affairs.
He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Cora Plymale of Richmond, Va., Lucile and Jean and a son Everett also two granddaughters. Besides the brother, L. W. Johnston, he leaves an adopted sister, Mrs. Carl Rosenfeld of near here.
It was also learned that Mrs. Emma Johnston [wife of the deceased was Emma Mudgett before marriage] had just returned from a hospital where she had undergone an operation for the removal of cancer, when her husband was stricken. Both are well known in this community.

According to his death record the parents of John Millner Johnston are John Johnston and Petrea Kora. According to his brother's marriage record, the parents are John Johnston and T. Peterson.
According to census the family immigrated about 1897 and the parents are listed in the 1900 Palestine Township, Story County, Iowa as John and Petrea Johnson. They are buried in the Slater Cemetery as John and Petrea Johnson.
