Funeral Services for Warren Twp., Pioneer
Special to the Journal.
McCallsburg, Aug. 3--The funeral of John Peck, pioneer Warren township citizen, was held at the home Wednesday afternoon with a large number of relatives and friends attending, Rev. J. C. B. Peck, pastor of the Blairstown Presbyterian church officiating. The music was furnished by Mrs. F. E. Nail and Mrs. W. H. Reid who sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "Under His Wings," accompanied at the piano by Miss Cleo Tett.The many beautiful floral offerings were cared for by Mrs. Martin Haukoos and Miss Catherine Craig. Martin Haukoos served as usher. The pall bearers were the three sons-in-law John Schauper, Guy Mills and George Goss who considered it a privilege to serve their father to the last step. Burial was made in the family lot in the Nevada cemetery.
John Peck, son of James and Betsy Sheldon Peck, was born in Paulet, Vermont, October 2, 1852 and came with his parents to Tama county, Iowa, being about three years of age, where he grew to young manhood.
On December 24, 1873 he was united in wedlock to Clarissa Heaton at Toledo, Iowa. To this union were born sever children: Charles Edwin of Crookston, Minn., James Lewis, deceased, Earl John of Nevada, Ia., Fay Schauper and Leila Mills of McCallsburg, Millard Peck of Washington, D. C. an Mary Goss of Blairstown.
Beside the widow and children he leaves 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Mr. Peck is the last member of his family with the exception of a half sister and two half brothers.
Mr. and Mrs. Peck came to Warren township, Story county, in 1876, 60 years next spring, locating on a farm three miles northwest of the present village of McCallsburg, on the farm owned by Tom Johnson. When the Story City branch railroad was built he built a home in McCallsburg and engaged in grain, implement and stock business in which he continued for a number of years, later buying and living of the farm adjoining the town on the east. He and Mrs. Pec retired from farm life in 1913 and resided here until his death on Monday, July 29, 1935.
Mr. and Mrs. Peck were among the real pioneers of Warren township and they have seen swamp land developed into one of the most fertile farming districts of Story county. Also saw the development of and building of the present consolidated township school building. Mrs. Peck taught in her own home when she first came to Warren township later a school being built nearby.
In later years Mr. Peck had built up a very extensive potato market, especially in the marketing of northern grown seed stock. He was interested in the civic occupation of the community an had held various offices of responsibility in the community. He had been in failing health the past few weeks but his condition was not considered serious until he came down with the flu on Tuesday evening of last week when his condition became serious and passed away on Monday at 10:30 o'clock a. m. The children and their families were all present with the exception of the family of C. E. Peck who were unable to be present.
Relatives from out of town were a half brother of Mr. Peck, James Peck and son-in-law Harold Larson of Oelwein; Mrs. L. E. Heaton and daughter Mrs. Maude Barkley and Mrs. Bert De Lambert of Pierson, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Tompkins and Hazel of Morton, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Heaton of Elberon, Laurence Heaton, Van Horn, Rev. J. C. B. Peck and Miss Alma Hardin of Blairstown, Miss Bertha Peck, Primghar, A. H. Donnelson, Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Peck, Mrs. Herman Haukoos and Miss Florence Peck, Mr. R. W. Peck, Roland, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Smith and Wanda June, Ames, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Twedt and Dorothy, Zearing, Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Mills, Melbourne, Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Mills and Allen, Marshalltown.
Among the friends from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Bales, Marshalltown, Ed Gethman, Gladbrook, Prof. W. L. Harter, Ames, Mrs. Hannisch, St. Anthony, Mrs. Emma Harris, Mrs. Virgil Galbreath, Miss Birdella Swenson, Nevada, Mrs. E. M. Smith, Ames, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Coughenour, Melbourne, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Ruxton, James Ruxton of Zearing and probably a number of other out of town friends.
