Funeral Services Held For Mrs. Rose Nowning

SLATER -- Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. Rose Nowning who passed away Sunday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Gunderson.

A short service was held in the Riis Funeral home at 1:30. Mrs. Marie Clark and Mrs. Dale Ellsworth sang a duet "The Old Rugged Cross." Services were held in the Methodist church at 2 o'clock. Rev. and Mrs. Martin sang two duets, "Beyond the Sunset" and "In the Garden." Mrs. Phil Rood was accompanist.

Rev. H. N. Bakke of McCallsburg, a friend of the family, gave an inspiring message. Rev. Fred Martin, using the twenty-third Psalm as his text, brought consolation to the family, based on the thought "He Leadeth Me."

The flowers were arranged by Mrs. Morrill Nervig and Mrs. K. J. Granseth. There were also many gifts to worthy causes in memory of the deceased. Pall bearers were E. C. Rood, H. W. Marshall, Kermit Granseth, Oliver Newman, Phil Rood and Morrill Nervig. Ushers were Nels Sabo and M. B. Chader.

Interment was in the Slater Municipal cemetery.

Obituary

Rose Jensen was born on May 22, 1875, in Christiansand, Norway, to Torkel and Rachel Jensen At the age of five years she migrated with her family in the Little Sioux Valley, near Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Later the family moved to Minnesota.

On May 15, 1895, she was united in marriage to John Henry Anderson of Storm Lake, Iowa. One daughter Doris was born to this union. They lived their early married life at Storm Lake. Eight years later the husband and father was called by death.

The young widow and her daughter moved to Sioux City, where they live for ten years. On March 5, 1921, she was united in marriage to C. Frank Nowning, who preceded her in death about six years ago.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church, later transferring to the Methodist church.

In June 1949, while visiting a friend in Sioux Rapids, she had the misfortune to break her hip and from this injury she never fully recovered. Mrs. Nowning was cared for at the home of her daughter until her death. She contracted bronchial asthma which proved fatal on Sunday evening December 9.

Mrs. Nowning leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Doris (Mrs. John Gunderson), one granddaughter Joyce (Mrs. Clyde Anderson of Davenport); two sisters, Mrs. Anna Nelson of San Diego, Calif. and Mrs. L. A. Castor of Bakersfield, Calif.; one brother Oscar Jensen of Hibbing.
