THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, March 3, 1949, page 1, column 4. "JOSEPH H. SUTTON - Funeral services for Joseph Henry Sutton were held Sunday February 20, at the Travis Walters Funeral home in Prairie City. Mr. Sutton was 89 years old and passed away on February 18 at the farm home of his son Hiram Sutton. Rev. Lester C. Hall, pastor of the Prairie City Methodist church officiated at the rites. Hymns "Going Down the Valley" and "Good Night and Good Morning" were sung by Mr. and Mrs. Chase Rinehart accompanied by Mrs. Earl Kain. The pallbearers at Prairie City were W. C. Cowman, Worth Cowman, Willie Erskin, Earl Kain, Roy Schrader and Elsmer** Walker and at Maxwell were Marvin Kenney, Vernon Bell, Ben Hartley, Lem White, Dan Pring and Raymond Hopper. Rev. Elmer Baker of the Maxwell Church of Christ had charge of the graveside rites at the Maxwell Cemetery. The son of Hiram and Jane Sutton, Mr. Sutton was born November 9, 1859 in Florence Township, Williams county, Ohio. United in marriage with Esther Bates in 1891 and moving to Iowa in 1901. His wife preceded him in death in 1903 and a son also preceded him. He was a regular attendant at the church services in his younger life. A man of courage, very unselfish and cheerful to the last, he was a kind and loving father and grandfather. For the past 22 years he had made his home with his son Hiram and family. Survivors include two sons, Hiram of Prairie City and Orville of Maxwell, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
