THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, July, 2, 1914, page 1, column 4. "OBITUARY - Mary E., daughter of John and Eliza Oxley was born in Illinois April 6, 1858, and died at her home one and one half mile eaast** of Elkhart, June 26, 1914. She came when quite young, with her parents to Iowa, and settled on the home farm east of Peoria, where she grew to womanhood, and on October 27, 1878, was married to Russell Spooner. Eight children were born to them, one daughter dying in infancy; the surviving ones are Elmer, Irving, and Mrs. Myrtle Burns, married and living near home; George, Earl, Alice and Marion, single, and living at home, who with their father mourn her death. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Sarah Hilton, of Cambridge; three brothers, W. R. and J. C. Oxley, of Maxwell, who were present at the funeral , and C. G. Oxley, of Cedar Rapids, who was unable to be present. The funeral was held Sunday, at 2:00 o'clock p. m., from the Elkhart Church of Christ, of which she had been a member for twenty-nine years, the services being ably conducted by the pastor, Rev. Burton. Appropriate music was rendered by the choir; the floral offerings were beautiful, and the attendance large. Interment was made in the Elkhart cemetery. The following from Maxwell were in attendance at the funeral: Messrs. and Mesdames W. R. Oxley, J. C. Oxley, S. J. Tomlinson, Loren Ayers. Misses Laura Hilton, Goldie Oxley, and Clyde Oxley." **Editorial note - spelling used is from the original newspaper article.
