THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, June 19, 1902, page 1, column 5. "Mary Acker Shope was born in Union county, Pennsylvania, December 10, 1825, and died at her home in Maxwell, Iowa, June 14, 1902, aged seventy-six years, six months and four days. Her parents moved to Crawford county, Ohio, while she was yet quite small and she there grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to David F. Shope August 26 1852; to this union was born four sons and one daughter, all of whom were present at the time of her death, except one son who preceded her to the spirit world. Mr. and Mrs. Shope would have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary had she lived till the 26th of August. Mrs. Shope was for many years a consistent christian woman and has been a patient sufferer during her recent illness which began April 21st, thus lasting about eight weeks during which no pains were spared to supply her wants, she being constantly watched day and night by her sons and daughters, and during all this time she never uttered a word of complaint, but was exceedingly cheerful although she suffered greatly. Mrs. Shope was a kind, loving wife and mother and a good neighbor and was ever willing to do all that she could for her friends. The bereaved family have the sympathy of all in this their sad affliction. The funeral was held at the family residence Monday at 2 p. m. conducted by Rev. Clay Bobbitt, of the C. P. church, who preached a very able sermon. The remains were taken to the Iowa Center cemetery where interment was made."

THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, June 19, 1902, page 4, column 3. Mrs. Mary Richardson, of Custer, S. D., who was here during the illness and death of her mother, Mrs. D. F. Shope, returned to her home Monday. She was accompanied by Miss Birdie Shope who will spend some time with her aunt."

THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, June 19, 1902, page 5, column 5. "G. W. and Mrs. Ellen Shope, of Des Moines, attended the funeral of Mrs. D. F. Shope Sr. Wm. Shope, of Valeria, was also present."
