THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, April 23, 1908, page 1. "OBITUARY - Samuel Scott was born in Richland County, Ohio, October 29, 1821, and died at his home in Polk County, Iowa, April 19, 1908, being at his death eighty-six years, five months and twenty days of age. Mr. Scott was united in marriage to Manerva Fisher in 1843 in Burrit, Winnebago County, Ill., where they resided till 1863, when they came to Iowa, locating in Mitchell County. In 1863 they came to Polk county, and settled on a farm two miles south of the present site of Maxwell, where the family has resided continually ever since. There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Scott six children, four of whom died in early childhood. Two daughters only survive them, viz., Mrs. Mary Bell, of Peoria, and Mrs. Malissa Barton, who resided with her father until his death. Mrs. Scott passed away just one year previous to the death of her husband. The deceased united with the Baptist Church in early life, but after coming to Iowa he united with the M. E. Church, in which denomination he remained for a number of years, but at the time of his death did not hold membership in any church. "Uncle Sammy" Scott, as he was familiarly called, has been a prominent figure in growth and development of this section of the county, and was highly esteemed by all acquainces and dearly loved by numerous friends. His heart was easily touched by the suffering of mankind and an appeal for aid in worth cases was never made to him in vain. The name of Samuel Scott was synonymous with philanthropic work and he was a leader in this line. Warm hearted, frugal and industrious he acquired a competence for old age, and his death has left a niche, that will be hard to fill. Residing in this vicinity for so many years he saw the ground staked out for the location of Maxwell and has watched its development with a paternal eye, and has at all times been found battling for the right. The funeral services were conducted form the home, Tuesday afternoon by Rev. T. F. Martin, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Peoria City Cemetery. 'Life's race will run, Life's work well done, Life's victory won, Then cometh rest." ." ***editorial note, the obituary shows the spellings of names and words as they appeared in the Maxwell Tribune.
