THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, May 14, 1903, page 1. "ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF FRED C. SCOTT - That life is an uncertainty was again demonstrated by the accidental death of Fred C. Scott, a farmer Maxwell boy but who had been in Clarke county, near Osceola, for the last few months. Fred, with some other boys, had been up to Osceola and were going home on the train and he was standing on the bottom step of the car when some how his foot was caught in a cattle guard at a crossing and he was thrown from the train and so badly hurt that he succumbed to his injuries. Fred C. Scott, the subject of this sketch, was born in Story county, Iowa, May 21, 1882, and died May 10, 1903, at Osceola, being at the time of his death twenty years, eleven months and nineteen days old. His mother died when he was three and one-half years old, leaving him and his younger brother, Harry, who has proceeded him to a better land about six years ago, with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Barton, with whom he has since lived. When fourteen years of age he was afflicted with rheumatism and lay sick about a year suffering a great deal. Many times since he has been terribly afflicted but was brave and he tried not to mind the suffering. He was a kind hearted, ambitious boy. He came to his death on Sunday, May 10, 1903, by being thrown from a train near Osceola as above stated. He was taken to a hospital in Osceola where he under went an operation, having his limb amputated, which had been broken in three places. He lived about twelve hours after the accident, being conscious to the last. The remains were shipped here for burial, arriving on No. 6 Monday night and the funeral was held at the C. P. church Tuesday at 2:00 p. m. being in charge of Rev. Clay Bobbitt who preached an excellent sermon, and interment was made in the Peoria City cemetery."
