THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, February 18, 1897, page 1, column 4. “SCOTT – Died, at the residence of his grandmother, Mrs. Robert Barton, near the north part of town, on Monday, Feb. 15, 1897, Harry Leander, son of Leander and Hulda Scott, after an illness of less than one week, aged 11 years, 6 months and 1 day. Harry was born Aug. 14, 1885, near State Center, Iowa. His mother died Oct. 27th following, when he was less than 3 months old. His brother, Fred, and he were taken by their grandparents and were treated just as their own in every respect. The responsibility was great, but Mr. and Mrs. Barton left nothing undone to add to the comfort and training of the little boys thus providentially placed in their hands. Mr. Barton’s health failed, and after a lingering illness, he died April 20, 1892. Mrs. Barton still clung to the boys and gave them all needed care. Last fall Fred came down with a severe illness and still lies in a helpless condition. A few days since Harry came home from school sick, and in less than one week was a corpse. He was a bright boy of a noble and generous disposition, a faithful Sunday School scholar and Junior Endeavorer. He had many friends and well wishers among old and young. He will be missed by all of us. The funeral was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, in the C___ P___ Church, conducted by Rev. Ferguson, assisted by Rev. McVicker, Rev Bentley’s brother and Rev. R. H. Lint, after which the remains were taken to the Peoria cemetery and laid near those of his mother and grandfather, with deep sorrow upon the part of many.” “CARD OF THANKS – Mrs. Robert Barton tenders her profoundest thanks to her neighbors and friends untiring attention and kindness bestowed upon her while the hand of affliction rested so heavily on her home, first in the long illness of Fred, and then the later and more fatal illness of Harry. Mrs. B. can never forget the unstinted measure with which her neighbors have dealt to her in the time of her trial and adversity.”
