Funeral Rites for Mrs. Queensland Held Monday
Slater, Feb. 16--Funeral services for Mrs. Malinda Queensland, 85, were held Monday afternoon. A prayer service was conducted at the home at 1:30 o'clock followed by services at the Haugen church at 2 o'clock.
Rev. P. E. Onstad assisted by Rev. Curt Noren conducted the services. The beautiful floral offerings were arranged by Miss Marie Folgero and Mrs. John Hermann.
Rev. P. E. Onstad sang, "I'm A Pilgrim", and Mrs. Jeanne Marie Embree sang "Does Jesus Care?" Mrs. Phil Rood played the piano accompaniments. The pallbearers were grandsons and other relatives, Kenneth Queensland of Jewell, George Lundy of Des Moines, Dale Swanson of Boone, Kermit Johnson of Madrid, Lewis Gilbert of Kelley and Willard Henderson of Ellsworth.
Large sums of money were given to the missions in memory of Mrs. Queensland. Burial was made in the Slater cemetery.
Anna Malinda Halverson was born February 28, 1859, near Moseco, Dane county, Wisconsin. Her parents were the late Ole and Anna Halverson. She died at her home in Slater February 9, at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 9 days, after a lingering illness, being bedfast for eleven weeks. She was lovingly cared for by her daughters.
When nine years old she came to Iowa with her parents and a large group of Norwegian pioneers from Wisconsin, and they settled in Polk county. They came in covered wagons, drawn by oxen. It took four weeks to make the trip.
Her father bought a 160 acre farm south of Sheldahl where he built a three-room log cabin.
She was confirmed in the Nervig school house southeast of Slater by Rev. Andre Johanson and often walked two and a half miles to attend Sunday School at the same school house.
Her marriage to Knut Queensland took place February 21st, 1880, and they acauired a farm three miles southeast of Slater, but later bought a farm one mile south of Slater. To this union nine children were born. Three of them died in infancy. Her husband died April 3, 1899, and she remained on the farm until 1912 when the family moved into Slater and bought a home.
She has been an active member of the Hauges church and its organizations for many years and always liberal in her donations and service for the church. She was a devoted mother and friend.
She is survived by six children, Anna, (Mrs. Tom Lundy), Alma, (Mrs. W. H. Schaudt) of Slater, Clara, (Mrs. Martin Johnson) of Kelley, Millie, (Mrs. Orville Swanson) of Slater, Alie Quinsland of Nevada and Carl Quinsland of Jewell. Eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren are living. Also one half-brother, Halver O. Halverson of Huxley, one step-brother, A. G. Raynes of Ames, two nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. She was one of the most interesting and beloved women of the Slater community and will be missed by all.
