Robert Stowe is killed in construction accident

A former Nevadan, 25-year-old Robert Stowe of Elkhart, was killed instantly about 9 a.m. Monday morning while working on a construction project at Iowa State University in Ames. Electrocution was blamed for the death of Stowe, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord Stowe of Nevada. His mother is school nurse at Nevada Community Schools.

Authorities reported that Stowe was operating a crane which came in contact with an 18,000 volt substation attached to one of the buildings under construction in the physical plant at Iowa State University.

He reportedly was using the crane to hoist steel to the top of the building Fellow workers managed to get him off the crane and applied mouth to mouth resuscitation, but Stowe was pronounced dead on arrival at Mary Greeley Hospital.

The accident caused an interruption in power for about 15 minutes in several ISU campus buildings, along with the Highway Commission headquarters and a small area near the Commission building.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, are a child, brother and sister at home. He was married to the former Debbie Kappos of Cambridge. Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada is in charge of arrangements.
