Obituaries

Gudmund H. Amlund

Funeral services for Gudmund H. Amlund were held Saturday, January 20 at 10 a.m. at Story City Bethany Manor Chapel with Chaplain M. C. Hagedorn officiating; and at 2 p.m. in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Story City with Pastor C. A. Gisselquist officiating. Greetings were brought by Pastor T. J. Alvestad and Chaplain Hagedorn at this service.

The Norden Singers from Des Moines sang "Children of the Heavenly Father," "Lun Vilar Sken" and "The Lord's Prayer." Miss Louise Olson was organist.

Pallbearers were Earl Clayberg, Harris Hill, Duane Goodmanson, Harold Holm, Everett Anderson and James Dale. Honorary pall bearers were Theodore Larson, T. M. Holm, Serral Munsen, Tom Naig, Milo Helland and Ray Duff. Interment was in the Story City Municipal Cemetery.

Gudmund H. Amlund was born January 30, 1879 at Story City, the son of Hans and Katherine Amlund and passed away at Story City Bethany Manor, Jan. 27, lacking thirteen days of being 94 years old. His entire life was spent in Story City.

He was one of eight brothers and sisters, of whom who survive, Mrs. Nora Townswick, Story City and Mrs. Hannah Engibritson of Des Moines. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City. He was educated in the schools of his time in Story City and continued for a time at the Highland Park University, Des Moines where he was the first man from Story City to play the new game of football.

He was a member of the Riverside Band of Christytown, playing with that band for a number of years and later with the Story City Concert Band. He was a charter member of the Story City Volunteer Fire Department and retained membership for over 50 years. The casket bearers are present members of the department and the honorary bearers were members of the the department at the same time he was active. He was also a faithful and active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, The Greater Community Congress and Sons of Norway Lodge of Story City.

As a young man, he was a wagonmaker, working with his father in Story City. Later he became an electrician and helped bring electric lights and power to many homes and farms in Story City Municipal Light Department for many years as a lineman and serviceman.

He was united in marriage to Julia Mathre on June 30, 1910, celebrating their 62nd anniversary of their marriage on June 30, 1972. Three children were born to this union, of whom two daughters, Leota Amlund and Mrs. Ruth Amlund McBroom preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Julia of Story City Bethany Manor and on son, Bertram Amlund of Huxley; also a number of nieces and nephews.
