Roland's Oldest Man, Sam Twedt, Dies on Friday

Sam Twedt, the oldest man in Roland and the last charter member of the Bergen Lutheran Church, died at 2:15 p.m. Friday in the Story City Hospital at the age of 98.

Twedt suffered a stroke on Thursday and had been a patient in the hospital for two days.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Twedt, he was born on a farm northeast of Roland August 1, 1868. He spent his lifetime farming on his place northwest of Roland, except for a few years on a farm near Estherville. He retired and moved to Roland in 1944.

In 1889 he was married to Miss Alice Christian of Roland. Three children were born: Herman, who died in 1954, Cecelia Wicks and Helen Imsland, both of Ames. Mrs. Twedt died in 1901.

In 1903 Twedt was married to Miss Hattie Krohn. Four children were born: Allis, who died in 1951; Harold who died in 1916; Mr. Jerald Borwick of Roland, and Samuel of McCallsburg. Other survivors include 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, two daughters-in-law, and one sister, Mrs. Julia Osheim.

Twedt served on the McCallsburg School Board at the time the school was consolidated. He had been a member of the Farmers Elevator Board at McCallsburg, the Farm Mutual Insurance Company board at Roland.

He was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at the Bergen Lutheran Church with the Rev. H. M. Lybeck officiating at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Roland Cemetery.
