DEATHS

Miss Belle Hovland

Funeral services for Miss Belle Hovland was held Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Story City. A prayer service was held at 10 a.m. at Bethany Manor Chapel. Officiating pastors were Pastor C. A. Gisselquist and M. C. Hagedorn.

Mrs. Loren Twedt of Roland was soloist, organist, Mrs. Harold Olson.

Burial was in the cemetery at Roland. Serving as pallbearers were Talmer Tjelmeland, William Tjelmeland, Jr., Dwayne Tjelmeland, Vern Tjelmeland, Carroll Tjelmeland and Floyd Strother.

Ingeborg Belle Hovland, daughter of Tolief and Ingeborg (Sandvik) Hovland was born on Oct. 2, 1871 at Etne, Bergen, Norway.

She was baptize and confirmed in the Christian faith in Stole, at Etne, Bergen, Norway.

She came to the United Stats in 1895 and made her home with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Torkle Sande, Story City. She worked for a short time in Marshalltown and in 1897 began working in Des Moines, until 1929. In 1902, she returned to Norway and stayed six months, and again in 1917, she went and stayed two years.

Two sisters and her only brother also came to the United States with only one sister remaining in Norway.

Miss Hovland lived in Des Moines in her own home from the time she quit working in 1929 until she came to Story City to live at Bethany Manor in October 1949.

While working and living in Des Moines she was a faithful member of Central Lutheran Church and after coming to Story City she became a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Miss Hovland died at the Story City Memorial Hospital Sunday Oct. 8 at the age of 101 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents three sisters and her brother.

Survivors include three nephews in Norway, one niece in Canada and three nephews and two nieces in the U.S. Also many other distant relatives survive in Norway and the United States.

Nieces and nephews in the U.S. are John Hovland, Rapid City, S. Dak., Tolief Hovland, Blue Eath, Minn., Elmer Hovland and Ingeborg Eide, Chicago and Mrs. Bertha Tjelmeland, Story City, wife of the late William Tjelmeland.
