MRS. IDA GILLEY

COLLINS -- Funeral services were held in the Christian church Thursday afternoon, January 1, for Mrs. Ida Belle Gilley, with the Rev. Robert McDonald officiating and assisted by the Rev. Charles Hagee of Melbourne.

Vocal selections were by a trio composed of Pat Caulkins, Dorothy Holland and Naomi Pointer, accompanied by Virginia Fertig. They sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "The Lord is My Shepherd," and Rev. Hagee sang "The Lord's Prayer."

Flowers were cared for by Mertie Pritchard and Margaret Mead. Active casket bearers were Donald Gilley, Donald Smith, Harold Smith, Kenneth Smith, Lester Smith and Orville Smith. Honorary casket bearers were Marion Smith, Conrad Smith and Arnold Smith, all grandsons.

Burial was in the Collins Evergreen cemetery with the Ryan Funeral Service of Melbourne in charge.

Life Sketch

The following life history was read by the minister:

Ida Belle Gilley, daughter of John and Sarah Halterman, was born at Palmyra, Iowa March 22, 1871 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Zola Shugart in Melbourne Dec. 29, 1958 at the age of 87 years, nine months and seven days.

She was married to George McLeonard Gilley on March 24, 1888. Their home was established in the Runnells community and they moved to Story county in 1890. In 1900 they moved into Collins where their home has been maintained ever since.

To this union were born six children, three boys and three girls.

Preceding her in death were one son, her husband, one brother, three sisters, four half-brothers and two half sisters.

Surviving are the children, Mrs. Eva Fertig, Mrs. Orrin (Sarah) Smith of Collins, Mrs. Ray (Zola) Shugart of Melbourne, William E. of Collins and Gerald L. of Maxwell; 8 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren, and two half brothers, Melvin Halterman of Washington, Iowa and John Halterman of Roland.

Grandma, as she was affectionately known, was a member of the Christian church for many years and was active as long as her health permitted. She had been in failing health for several months and had gone to Melbourne to spend the winter with her daughter. She was ill and bedfast for five weeks.
