REV. SANFORD SHAFLAND
The Rev. Sanford Oswald Shafland, 51, who died of a heart attack on Jan. 5 at Seattle, Wash., and was buried there Jan. 9, grew up in Roland and attended the Roland schools from which he graduated in 1925.
He was confirmed in Bergen Lutheran church in Roland by Rev. Sumstad. He was graduated from Luther College in 1929 and in 1933 from the Lutheran Seminary in Minneapolis, Minn.
He entered to Army as a lieutenant at the beginning of World War II, serving as Army Chaplain. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for ground operations in the Pacific area. He rose to the rank of major.
At the end of the war he returned to Tacoma, Wash. and served as pastor of Our Savior's Lutheran church. In 1952 he took is family to Ketchikan, Alaska he was awarded the Scouters Key by the Boy Scouts of America for his work with youth while in Ketchikan.
He had served pastorates in Livingston, Mont., St. Cloud, Minn., Tacoma, Wash. and Ketchikan, Alaska. At the time of his death he was pastor of the Port Madison Lutheran church in Seattle. He was married in 1936 to Agnes Mellum and the same year was pastor of Lutheran churches in Livingston, Mont. and St. Cloud, Minn.
The Rt. Rev. H. L. Foss, Seattle, bishop of the Pacific Lutheran Seminary in Seattle, officiated at the funeral service. Burial was in the Olympic Peinsula cemetery, Seattle.*
Surviving are the wife Agnes and one son, Daniel J. Shafland of Seattle, Wash. Also surviving are the mother, Mrs. Bertha Shafland of Roland, the brothers, Erwin of Superior, Wis., Lester of Knoxville and John of Roland and the sisters, Irene, Mrs. Arthur Amundson of Sioux City, and Lydia, Mrs. L. G. Schreiber of Arlington Heights, Ill., all of whom, but Erwin who was ill, were in attendance at the funeral.
