THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, November 21, 1901, page 10, column 5. "A wreck occurred on the C., M. & ST. P. RY. At Slater last Friday morning about two o'clock, in which one man was instantly killed and another badly injured. A west bound freight broke in two a mile west of town and the engineer, soon noting what had happened, started back down grade for his train when he collided with the rear portion. The first car, loaded with coal, was thrown off the track and turned over. The two men were riding in the car on top of the coal and when the car was turned over were caught under the coal. The name of the man killed, was Magee, that of the one injured, Grubbs. Both were carried to the depot where they remained until next day when the one was sent to poor farm and the body of the dead man held until instructions were had from his people. The home of both was Madison, Indiana."
