THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Story County, Iowa, Thursday May 31, 1934, page 8. "MRS. ELIZABETH KULOW - Elizabeth Adeline Hunt wise Kulow, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Hunt, was born at Cadez, Indiana, on May 29, 1841. She passed way at her home in the Peoria community Saturday evening, May 19, 1934, being 92 years, 11 months and 20 days of age. When but 17 years of age she moved with her parents to Iowa, where she spent the remainder of her life, her parents having returned to Indiana after but one year's residence in Iowa. On September 8, 1859, she was united in marriage to Edward W. Wise at Peoria City. To this union two children were born, William wise and Florence Rose Wise. Her husband, Edward W. Wise, passed away on December 18, 1867. For three years following his death she lived with her two children on forty acres, that is a part of the present Kulow farm and taught the Chapel school. She was married to G. Fredreick** Kulow on October 13, 1870, at Peoria. To this union six children were born. The youngest, Pearl H. Kulow, passed away June 17, 1900. She was also preceded in death by her husband, G. Fredrick Kulow, he having passed away January 30, 1890. She is survived by six children, William W. wise, of Des Moines; Eliza D. Swarm, of Des Moines; victor A. Kulow, of Peoria community, Maxwell; Nellie M. Randall, of Maxwell; Merle A. Sherill, of Tacoma, Wash., and Lora M. Eagleson, of Boise, Idaho. She made her confession of the Christian faith many years ago and united with the Methodist Protestant church at Peoria City to which membership she remained faithful until death. Her life has been long and fruitful and in passing another of those pioneer mothers, whose industry, toil and frugality and unflinching faith in God gave to us the blessings of our present day possession. Mrs. Kulow was the oldest resident of Washington township and had lived for 55 years on the present farm.. Even though advanced in years her mental ability was outstanding and until about tow years ago she was able to manage and attend to her business affairs. It was Grandma Kulow's request that this poem, "The Failure," written by her daughter, Merle Sherrill, be read at her funeral. "The Failure by Merle Kulow Sherrill - although I ever did my best, My best was far form good. Although I failed to reach the goal I did the best I could. Long days I toiled 'neath the burning suns With hand that knew no skill, although I strove with might and main, The place I could not fill, I longed to write some kindly thought To cheer my fellow men, Alas, the words I could not form Beneath my faltering pen. I fain would sing a joyous song To brighten land and sea, But I alone in all the world Have heard the melody. I sought to paint a picture bold To stem the world's mad rush, The colors somehow failed to blend Beneath my faulty brush. And when there comes the long dark night That ends my futile day, and when I stand before the throne what will the Master say? Perhaps He'll turn His grieving face And say "You must depart," Or, will He take me to His breast With understanding heart? Somehow, I feel He'll say to me, "You did but little good, But enter through the Fates of Peace, You did the best you could." Funeral services were held at the Peoria church and were in charge of her former pastor, Rev. C. R. Green. Appropriate music was furnished by a male quartet, composed of Elsworth Gibson, Martin H. Troup, C. B. French and Jim Beal, accompanied by Dorothy Beal. Jack, Stanley and Maurice Swarm, Des Moines; Virgil Swarm, of near Nevada; Joe Uhl and Basil Caple, of near Maxwell, her grandsons, were pall bearers. Burial took place in the Peoria cemetery. Out of town relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Wise, of Des Moines; Mrs. Lora Eagleson, of Boise, Iraho**; Mr. and Mrs. George Kulow and daughter, of Ames; Mrs. Lou Uhl, of Mitchellville; James Swarm and sons, of Des Moines; Mrs. E. H. Addison, or** Nevada; James Addison and Mrs. Etta Carpenter, of Des Moines. CARD OF THANKS - We wish to express our sincere thanks for the many acts of kindness during the illness and following the death of our mother.
