Rites Wednesday For H. G. Ambrose

NEVADA--Funeral services for Harry G. Ambrose, 91, 735 K avenue, whose death occurred at the Story County Hospital, Sunday, April 20, was largely attended at the Nevada Methodist church at 11 a. m. Wednesday.

The Rev. David Ash, pastor, was assisted by Dr. R. M. Shipman of Ames, former pastor of the Nevada Methodist church and longtime friend of the deceased, who paid a very fitting tribute to the deceased to had been a resident of Story county since he was a boy of 7 years. Mrs. Norman Dobson, organist played a number of selections before and after the service.

Honorary casket bearers were Merton Coover, Harry Dana, Herbert Hadley, Oscar Hall, Carl Irish, Dr. Merton Johnson, P. K. Mathison, Donald Nelson, M. L. Snyder, Dr. W. B. Sperow, Carl Stone, Dr. C. N. Swihart, Robert Walters, Rev. E. P. Windman and H. M. Vinsel.

Active casket bearers were Lloyd Child, Harold Fawcett, John Hattery, Glen R. Newton, Wayne Olive and Harold Tipton.

Attending the service in a body were the Nevada Rotary club, the 20th Century club and Masonic Lodge.

The many beautiful flowers were arranged by Mrs. Loretta Crouch, Mrs. Oscar Hall and Mrs. Glen R. Newton and Mrs. C. A. Ryan.

Burial was in the Nevada cemetery.

Obituary

Harry Goodman Ambrose was born in Millidgeville, Illinois, on Jan. 13, 1867 and passed away at the Story County Hospital in Nevada on Sunday evening, April 20, 1958 at the age of 91 years, 3 months and 7 days.

He was the eldest son of six children born to John Wesley and Lucy McNair Ambrose.

When Harry was seven years old his family moved from Illinois to Colo, Iowa. In 1886 the sons, Harry, Frank and Will joined their father in the management of a mercantile business in Nevada.

On June 25, 1908, in Jefferson, Iowa, he was married to Stella Glover. Of their five children, two daughters died in infancy.

Harry had been active in civic and church affairs all his life. He joined the Methodist church at an early age and has remained a member through the building of two churches. He served as Sunday school superintendent for many years, and also as chairman of the Board of Trustees and Official Board. He has been president of Nevada Community club, the school board, a charter member and president of the Rotary club, and a member of the city council. He was also a 69 year member of the Twentieth Century club, a charter member of the Indian Creek Country club, a member of the Men's Apparel Club of Iowa, and the Des Moines Consistory.

He is survived by his wife Stella, daughter Harriette (Mrs. K. W. Kinsey), son Glover, all of Nevada; daughter Shirley (Mrs. J. E. Hammond) of Utica, N. Y.; sister Eva (Mrs. C. F. Adams) of Boise, Idaho, and six grandchildren, Bryce, Ann, Paul, Terrell, Mark and Craig.

In attendance at the funeral service from a distance were Mrs. Jerry Hammond of Barneveld, N. Y., Mr. and Mrs. Allen Ambrose, Chicago, Ill., Mrs. C. F. Adams, Boise, Idaho, Charles A. Adams, Boise, Idaho, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Le Gore of Jefferson, Dr. and Mrs. Tom B. Throckmorton, Des Moines, R. J. Monroe, Cedar Rapids, Mrs. H. H. Stipp of Des Moines and a number of others from Ames, Marshalltown, Des Moines, Cambridge, Colo, Maxwell, Cedar Rapids, Zearing, Pella, Perry and Waterloo.
