SAMUEL NELS HOLLAND
ROLAND Funeral services for Sam Holland were held from the Erickson Funeral Home at two o'clock on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 31, in Roland. The Rev. Everett N. Nelson officiated. Mary Ann Bakke sang "Abide With Me," and "Rock of Ages," at the service. Interment was in the Roland cemetery.
Pallbearers were Reuben Larson, Marvin Nelson, Bennett Hegland, Merle Twedt, Julius Johnson and Robert Strum. Military rites were conducted at the graveside by the American Legion Post 307.
Life Sketch
Samuel Nels Holland, son of Ole and Betsy Holland was born in Roland, Iowa on May 3, 1901. He was baptized in Bergen Lutheran church and confirmed in Salem Lutheran church. He attended the Roland schools, and in 1917 he enlisted in the Army and served for two years. Since then he has lived and worked in Des Moines.
He was admitted to the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines on July 18, with a broken leg. On Aug. 13 he underwent surgery and seemed to be recovering. On Aug. 28 he became seriously ill and died that evening.
He is survived by two sisters Mrs. Agnes Fossel of Ames and Mrs. Anna Jacobson of Roland, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ole.
Among those in attendance at the funeral from out of town were from Worthington, Lake Wilson and Rock Rapids, Minn., Story City, Marshalltown, Ames, Alden and Traer.
