Obituary

Mrs. Abel Olson was born Feb. 26, 1836 in Stockland, Norway and died at her home in Roland Feb. 12, 1914 at the age of 77 years 11 months and 16 days. She had been in failing health for several months but the infirmities of old age did not manifest a serious aspect until about a week prior to her death. She was glad to go and join her loved ones on the other shore, there to receive the reward bestowed up on those who keep the faith to the end.

Her childhood was spent in the land of the midnight sun, the land that holds the mystic spell of sweet memories over the hearts of many in the vicinity, but true to the spirit of the times she together with her sister joined the tide of immigration journeying to America, reaching Chicago in 1857, where they spent two years.

On March 4th, 1859 she was married to Abel Olson and that same year they left Chicago, coming to Story County, Iowa where they settled on a farm south east of Roland. Here these worthy people lived for more than twenty years. The first years were years of privation and toil peculiar to early pioneer life, but as time passed conditions improved. In the midst of their prosperity a great sorrow came over Mrs. Olson in the loss of her husband, who departed this life in 1900. She remained on the farm until 1911 when she moved to Roland, where she has since made her residence.

The funeral services were conducted from Bergens church on Saturday last and many came to pay their last respects to the deceased. Interment took place in the Roland Cemetery. Rev. T. Lerud had charge of the services.

She leaves four stalwart sons and three brothers to mourn her death George and Andrew of this place, Ole of Triumph, Minn. and Carl of Huntington Beach, Calif. Her brothers Jermiah, and Ole J. Olson of this place and Marcelius Olson of Fergus Falls, Minn.

[Transcriber note: Her grave marker in the Roland Cemetery reads: "OLSON Jorine his wife b. in Stavanger, Norway Feb 26 1836 d Feb 12 1914 in Roland Ia.]
